This keeps coming up and I need an easy link to give people about it so I can stop explaining it every time and also so that I can start referencing it in fic and have a handy diagram post explaining it, so here's The Post About Our Uchiha Headcanons. Many of these form the foundation of headcanons used in In a Definite Place at a Definite Time. This post was written before we'd taken that on as a group project, I think, but @vagabonddawn was probably writing it a lot already. @pepperdoken and @silver_queen_dos as well as @juno-nine.ao3 and I just... got really really into talking about the Uchiha, you know.

Uchiha family tree.

The first image below shows how various folks are related and what their lineage is. "Lineage???" I hear you ask.

Uchiha Lineage — The Uchiha clan is subdivided into lineages based on Mangekyou manifestations. A lineage starts when a new Mangekyou power manifests (a rare event, as one might imagine) and is assumed to be passed down from parent to child. Some mangekyou lineages cover several powers: for example, Tsukuyomi users are considered Amaterasu lineage even if they can't use Amaterasu, although that's probably fairly rare.

The three lineages outlined below are Amaterasu lineage, Yatagarasu lineage, and Kotoamatsukami lineage. Characters with color filled in on their boxes manifested the Mangekyou in question. Characters with only colored outlines are simple assumed to be carriers of the lineage. For some characters (Fugaku, or Tajima's wife, etc.) there's probably a notable lineage since they married so high in the clan, but it's not really relevant to anything I've got planned so it's not shown.

Having a good lineage gets you a good amount of status in the clan! When Kagami manifested Kotoamatsukami out of the blue, he gained a lot of social and political clout, for example. The closer you are in relation to the last person who manifested the Mangekyou the higher you are in the lineage, so although there are probably other Yatagarasu lineage Uchiha in the clan, Hikaku and his children became the main line of that lineage when he manifested Yatagarasu.

The main line of the Amaterasu lineage is where clan heads are drawn from, but more on that later.

Diagram of several Uchiha Clan lineages.

A few notes:

  • Hikaku — Hikaku is a canon character who was in about one scene. Popular fanon says he's clan third, imo largely because it's not like there are a lot of other named Uchiha from that time. Pretty much everything about him is made up, like most of everything about the WCE.

  • Hikaku's father, Niniji — He died before Hikaku manifested Yatagarasu, so when he was alive he was considered Amatrasu lineage like Tajima and their sister.
  • Sai — Obviously Sai doesn't manifest Yatagarasu in every verse. He does in the dark fire will not avail you, though.
  • Kanatoko, Sai's mother — This part of the family tree is based on [personal profile] voldecourt's Nara!Sai stuff. Kanatoko is a Kurama; her father was an Uchiha which was an open secret in the Kurama clan up until the Uchiha massacre, at which point the Kurama clan collectively stopped talking about it ever because yikes. Sai's father was Nara Ikoma, Shikaku's younger brother.
  • Uzume & her other close relations — Pretty much everyone in the Yatagarasu line are [personal profile] pepperdoken's OC but I rub my grubby little hands all over them all the time.
  • Madara's immediate non-canon family, Hikaku's wife, and Kagami's wife — Pepper has a name for Hikaku's wife that's slipping my mind; I'll add her in later. Madara's brothers could actually all be older or some older and some younger. Madara's mom has previously been called Hitomi, and is still in the other diagram on this post, but I've removed the name here because I won't be using it anymore. Kagami's wife might have been named Nakano, which per In a Definite Place at a Definite Time we headcanon as a common name for Uchiha girls, especially lower members of the clan.

Clan power structure

There were so many thought processes behind this and I will attempt to sum them up real quick but I'm 100% certain this would come off better in a narrative format and I'm going to forget stuff, but here we go:

  1. Really, I can't imagine Madara having kids. Or Izuna. It seems like if Madara had any close family members left, he wouldn't have gone so dang crazy. So part of this was figuring out how exactly Sasuke was related to Madara.

  2. The homeguard was I think first mentioned by me in Lone Wolf but uhhh might have come from elsewhere? The idea is that Uchiha women don't actually retire from kicking ass when they start having kids, they just start staying home so that they're in prime ass-kicking range of anyone who might hurt the kiddos. Therefore, jounin Mikoto hanging up her vest to loiter around at home doing childcare had simply decided that the most important place to continue being terrifying and dangerous was at home; her skills and training lapsed not at all except for the expected post-birth recovery. You can pry competent jounin-level mom!Mikoto from my cold dead hands.

  3. What we also decided is that the clan had a very obvious split essentially between "people who go outside the compound to kick ass" and "people who stay inside the compound to kick ass." The outguard was concerned with missions, the security of Uchiha borders, and fighting the Senju. The homeguard was concerned with internal security, training the young folks up, and the logistics of keeping a large clan running. Homeguard ninja might help with patrols and such close to the compound, but would rarely travel far from it at all.

  4. Each part of the clan had a leader — the homeguard head and the outguard head. Outsiders almost never knew of the homeguard head's existence and would generally think of the outguard head as "the clanhead" but in truth for most of the clan's history the two positions were basically equal and simply had control over different things.

  5. Enter Tajima: he comes to power as the outguard head and is suuuuper paranoid about having his control of the clan "usurped" by the homeguard head. Rather than one of his siblings becoming homeguard head as expected, Tajima insists he can only trust his wife to lead the clan in domestic decisions. He then, you know, bullies the heck outta his wife to get his own way, to the detriment of the clan. Meanwhile, sensing disaster coming, the former homehead secretly trains Tajima's younger sister, Ohabari, to manage the homeguard duties that Tajima's wife is leaving undone.

  6. When Tajima's wife dies (and reminder that she's marked as 'Hitomi' on the diagram) Tajima refuses to let anyone else take over her duties. Niniji, Tajima's younger brother and Hikaku's father, speaks out in favor of homeguard a little too much and Tajima accuses him of trying to undermine Tajima's headship, executes him for treason in front of Ohabari and Hikaku. Ohabari then has to keep her homeguard activities a secret and train Hikaku in secret to take the position over.

  7. After Tajima dies, Madara is convinced to reinstate the homeguard under Hikaku's guidance, so Hikaku publicly becomes homehead. And then Izuna dies and Madara goes kinda grief-crazy and leaves and Hikaku has to briefly juggle being in charge of everything until Ohabari's son Minakata is ready to take over. Things basically continue to be a mess until the massacre.

  8. I'm probably leaving things out but I need to go do some other stuff so idk ask questions in the comments for this part too and I'll edit in more info as needed later?

The other lineage I remember us talking about was Kamui i.e. what Obito has. It's very, very rare and basically thought lost, hence everyone being Very Surprised when Kakashi pulls out that move in LW (and presumably other verses).

Sharingan swapsies! As in 'why does canon always talk about one person taking someone else's eyes and not, like, swapping them'. Which might have been where we came up with the concept of lineages - Mangekyo are somewhat rare, so you're not always going to be swapping with a direct sibling, and swapping across lineages can be a gamble depending on your family tree. You might not have the right background to actually use your shiny new eyes. Or one person might and one person might not!

Yatagarasu

For fic writing, the Yatagarasu mangekyou (loosely based on the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception) is able to see the weak points in everything and where to strike to break them with one strike.

There probably is some reality warping to make it possible to break things with one hit but then again it wouldn't be the sharingan without it.

Four and a half years late to the party, brought here by the Helio discord, but wanted to ask/bring up:
1) Is the Amaterasu line JUST the Amaterasu fire or does it, from the beginning, include the Tsukuyomi genjutsu and the Susanoo chakra armor? Maybe the reason why Sasuke and Itachi have all three is because there was lineage merging earlier on (for example, what lineage is Fugaku from?)
2) I know the wiki says that Izanagi and Izanami are techniques that anyone with a Mangekyo Sharingan can use (... somehow) but do we think maybe nah and they're part of a separate lineage or lineage(s) that combined early on?

Basically, because the genetic situation would get pretty dire if they stuck to their own lineage, do most Uchiha in the later generations technically have access to multiple lineages (but tend to have a "dominant" lineage based on ability/for the sake of record keeping?)

And this is just an extra for me, but I like to headcanon Aoba as a Schroedinger's bastard Uchiha: in your opinion which lineage would it make sense/be cool for him to be from?
